Pleez Edyookate

As a true fan of all movies including documentaries I decided to stop in and see Michael Moore's latest muckraking thriller, "Sicko", and have to admit he has made a compelling argument in favor of universal health care. Now, in an effort to appear like a truly informed American I've been doing some casual research into the views of the other side but in the process have reminded myself that I hate doing research. There's so much reading and looking around that is required. And so, for the first time, I am asking for the help of both my readers. I would like people to leave arguments that they have, or are aware of, opposing universal or socialized healthcare.

So please, in as many words as you would like, tell me why the U.S. should avoid such a change.

On Universal Health Care... I would love to see Universal Healthcare. As long as the government does not use the same model as the Veterans Administration healthcare program. Such a program must be protected from budget cuts. Not entirely immune, mind you, but it should be very difficult to make those kinds of changes. The VA is constantly being gutted by the government in the interests of funding the "War on Terror."

I have not yet seen Sicko so I can't comment fully on what Michael Moore has said, but I do not agree with creating a government run and sponsored universal health care system. Moore is a highly talented film maker and does a good job at presenting his arguments, but I also believe that he is very skilled at selecting the data, arguments, and stories that best support his view point, he does not present a balanced persepective. There are definitely problems with our healthcare system that need to be addressed, but do you honestly think that our government (weather run by republicans or democrats) can do a better job than the private sector? The previous comment by Joseph said that he would like Universal Healthcare if it wasn't run like the VA, what makes you think that the government would do anything different? Of course Universal Healthcare would be great if it was run perfectly and our taxes didn't go up WAY up to fund it. Changes need to be made, but Universal (government run healthcare) is not the answere. Here is an article that I found interesting related to Michael Moores proposal. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JohnStossel/2007/07/18/michael_and_me

I agree with Trevor. Ben, think about universal health care. Guess who's going to pay for it? You and me. You know, the people who actually work for a living and pay taxes. Aren't we paying for enough government programs as it is? The reason people can't afford healthcare is because juries have allowed people to sue for staggering amounts of money for medical mistakes. Therefore, the doctors must pay outrageous amounts for malpractice insurance. We know a radiologist in Vegas who pays over $200,000 a year for malpractice insurance. Who pays for it? His patients. Ben, do something about the ridiculous lawsuits this country allows. (I apologize to any lawyers who read this, but just stop already). But then again, you know T and I will always take the conservative route.

I'm in favor of universal health care, but then again I'm the guy who voted for Ralph Nader because Kerry wasn't liberal enough for me.
